Arts Event on the Common
A group of stalwarts gathered on the Saffron Walden Common on the 13th June to put on a display of prints to represent the Club. Tony Sweet brought a gazebo and some tables and display stands on which to show off our work. The new Exhibition Frames were used to display the prints.
We had a steady stream of visitors throughout the day, most of whom took a flyer about the new season of the Club. A number of other Arts groups were also there. It was a bit noisy because we were sandwiched in between two musical outfits. To the left of us was a pop music school. This had two very smart electronic drum kits and several electric guitars at which they were encouraging visiting youngsters to get hands on experience of. The towns' Brass Band was to the right of us and they had one real drum kit and several instruments which they encouraged other youngsters to tried their hand at playing. The group on the left had a lot amplification equipment with them to output their sound. The Brass Band group didn't need any.
The day was mostly sunny, but there were one or light showers of rain, when the space inside the gazebo was fully crammed. On the whole a pleasant enough day. We can now look forward to hoards of new members joining us in September, or did they just come to look at the pictures, or to get out of the rain?

Tony Sweet is awarded APAGB |
Tony Sweet, our Club Secretary, has received the APAGB award for meritorious service over more than 50 years (yes he started very young!) to several clubs and the East Anglia Federation. It was presented by Naomi Saul, President of the EAF, at the EAF Championships on 14th February 2010.
Tony was attending the EAF Championships to provide video projection of the prints being judged. Naomi read out the complete citation before presenting the certificate and badge. This delayed the start of actual championships by several minutes. The full citation reads as follows:
Camera Clubs In an unobtrusive but very efficient way, Tony Sweet has made significant contributions to the running of three camera clubs for more than 50 years and to the East Anglian Federation for more than 10 years.
Although very young when he joined Edmonton Camera Club in 1955, he quickly became an Officer of the Club taking on the role of Programme Secretary and serving on the Committee for the next 16 years. He was also Club Secretary and was elected an Honorary Vice-President of the Club for services rendered. He represented the Club on the Enfield Arts Council and was also involved in the organisation of the North London Salon of Pictorial Photography, an important Inter-Club event where all the camera clubs in north London submitted a panel of prints and slides to be displayed in an Exhibition.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve SWCC Day Trip |
The start of a new season and the first camera club outing was to Rutland Water Nature Reserve where two novice photographers would get their first chance to have some "On the Tripod" guidance from the more experienced members.
Leaving Saffron Walden at 04:30 we arrived at Rutland less than an hour later, in plenty of time to set up for the much anticipated "sunrise across the water". Loaded with all our equipment we made our way in the dark down to the water's edge, the only noise coming from the waterfowl greeting our arrival on the shore. Unfortunately cloud cover prevented the rays of sunshine caressing the landscape and awakening the lake. Also, the lack of rain over the last couple of months had reduced the water level considerably leaving the water's edge another 30 - 50 yards from its normal line exposing lots of gooey mud! They say every cloud has a silver lining and as we walked along the shore looking for some inspiration we discovered some eerie shapes which, as the light grew stronger, turned out to be some fantastic tree trunks and roots ravaged by time and now exposed by the receding water. |

Camera Trip to Blakeney and Wells |
Adrian Stillwell is taking up organising the SWCC outing's with enthusiam and thoughtfulness. Last weekend our trip started by Adrian collecting each of us from home and we left Saffron Walden at 3am for dawn on the beach at Wells-next-the-sea at 5am. Wells - Blakeney. Several of us had been to Wells a few times so we didn't stay long and moved on to explore new ground, for us all, at Blakeney, a picturesque little village on the Norfolk coast with views across the estuary and salt marshes. The weather was clear and still with little action from members of the resident sailing club. Several photogenic small wrecks decaying into the salt marsh and the only sound was that from birds. The rare red rump swallow had been reported in the area and fortunately we were ahead of the expected influx of ornithologists. After exploring the quayside and part of the estuary we had our customary bacon buttie sat outside a static caravan kitchen with the locals (good quality local products and earl grey tea) enjoying the atmosphere. |
